Add in a holiday where candy is a central focus and the words "Sugar", "Wild", " and "Constant talking" flash in your mind. In past years, I have just setup a lovely buffet table of punch and cookies for my students, watched a movie, exchanged valentines and did minute to win it. This year I changed up the flow and am so glad I did. The morning time from 9- 11:05 was spent doing rotating centers with my fellow teammates. Each room had a different activity that each class would rotate into for 25 minutes each cycle. We have 5 classrooms total, with one in a completely different hallway. (Which was a concern with time of transition and monitoring students, but we planned out very distinct transitions). I will post the map that I made of our rotations and schedule when I take a picture of it.

Room 1: Science focus--- sweetheart experiment
Room 2: Just Dance room and estimation activity
Room 3: Writing focus-- sweetheart writing
Room 4: Bingo
Room 5: (*my room)-- Lego Stem Heart challenge, and arts (heart animals and coloring)

I was so surprised how well all the students did within my room today. All students got involved in the lego heart project and were captivated. I first stumbled upon the Lego stem project via pinterest
See the link below to check it out.
Lego Stem Project

With 95 kids rotating through this station and with only 25 minutes, I revamped it a little. I had one half of my room working on the arts part and the other half the legos. After a student would make a heart they would trade with a student over at the crafts section. I made a heart last night and traced it on a piece of paper (just the outline). I then made copies of the outline and placed them on the student desks. I told them that the one hint I would give them to help them construct their heart was the outline. They had to problem solve how to make the the heart with the pieces they chose. I had separated out my brother's legos onto trays by color. I would call a few students at a time up to grab a handful of any color, could mix colors as well and then once everyone had there pieces then they could come get more if they needed more. This worked pretty well. I included doors and window legos and some odd shaped legos and the kids creativity really shined through. I told them that they couldn't use the lego people though. I loved it when I got to tie in metaphors into this experience when a student came up and said, "Look at the window to my heart." I asked her if she knew what type of figurative language she just used. The conversation went on from there and we came up with some other metaphors. I had another wonderful discussion with some students when they noticed I had a lot of yellow legos. We started wondering if lego sets have a higher number of yellow legos than other colors and how we could design an experiment to test that and what we thought would be the results. Some really great things happened during those 25 minute cycles.
Once students created their heart they added it to the heart sculpture we made as a community. It turned out really cool and the kids were so proud. Some pictures of our final product are below.
Our sculpture made students think about balance, weight, support, and what would be pleasing to the eye (engineering and architecture coming alive!).

During our time between lunch and specials (12:10-12:45) we had our valentine's exchange and packed out bags. We then moved our desks and chairs for our guests for our afternoon movie. After Specials we gathered all the kiddos into my room and watched Charlie and the Chocolate factory. Students weren't allowed to bring candy to the movie which helped keep trash down and student's attention on the movie (plus no wrappers rattling-- thank goodness!).
That took our full day. It was the cleanest--- and most calm valentine's day I have ever had with my class. These new plans are ones to keep!
Each student brainstormed how their kimono would look, feel, and sound. From there they colored their own kimono and started their drafts. We dissected the paragraph focusing on each piece. Topic sentence, detail sentences , and conclusion sentence were our focus. After peer editing we made our finals. To publish our work we placed them outside of our classroom and asked onlookers to try to match the kimono with its paragraph.
my kiddos have been quite busy.

Today we did our "tie-dye" of shirts which we plan on wearing as our swimsuit covers tomorrow at fun day. I must say the way I do Tie-dye is the easiest ever!

You need: (based on 27 students)

1. Rubbing alcohol-- I usually get 6-7 big bottles from walmart
2. white shirts- I usually ask the students to bring in one, old or new to use. I also buy a men's hanes pack for those that can't afford or forget their shirts.
3. Sharpies-- years past I have bought sharpie brand permanent markers.. but this year I went cheaper and got the target brand ones.. which were on sale and had a cartwheel coupon on them as well!. I only got 2 of the big packs. probably should have done 3 at least. But the kiddos did okay sharing.
4. rubber bands- just one package
5. spray bottles- i usually load up at least 4 of the mini spray bottles (got those at target, and use them for science during the year).
6. hangers or chairs.

I am so excited to actually be able to teach and not have to be dealing with tons of behavioral issues.
I started about 2 weeks ago checking in all my classroom books and making sure there were no sly book thieves (which there totally were!).

Today after school I had a couple goals:

1) Roll down the library lamination machine and continue laminating my posters and the like that I still needed laminated from last year.

2)Clean out the cubby corner: fix lit. circle book sets (tub them and label them), dust, get sci tubs straighten, make science bulletin board area for next year.

3) get the desks into the cubby area to clear the floor.

4) move couch to better spot and put the cushions on.

needless to say I left the building around 8pm.. hungry and with swollen feet.

look at that mess....

In lack of a better place for lit. circle book sets they now reside on top of my cabinets.

It brings up the new research data that suggests that autism is linked to cells being unorganized in the cortex of the brain during development in the womb.. what causes that.... that's the question. Highly recommend listening to it. The listener comments are decent as well.
I already love all my new teammates (so nice and welcoming!). I moved into my new room and had a stage 4 disaster going on. Over the past week I have managed to tame the piles. Tomorrow is the first contracted day.. can we say, no fun all together. Summer past too quickly!
I got moved to a different classroom for this next year and trying out some different decorating, organizing, and general management things to help reduce stress in my kiddos... and for my self. When I start getting it all straighten up I am sure there will be photos to follow.
I got an interview for the Dance Team Assistant Coach position and should know by tomorrow if I got the job. Even though it would be more work and probably more stress since its my first year teaching, I'm excited. At least I would able to be connected to dance! I have BIST training at the end of July.. however, if i get the dance position then I would have to do my BIST training later in the year (Something that I am kinda not sure about... I would rather do it during the summer and get the stipend money). Anywho
I also need my class list to print out the students names on the blue paper, to cut out and place on the center of the tag. Then I will laminate them with my thick, tough plastic laminate.

1. Remember that orange shelf?!?
The orange shelf that I had found in a garage sale earlier on I have now painted it to match my classroom color scheme more. I used the martha stewart paint : sunken pool paint. With the flash, in a not well lit room you can't totally tell the true color of it, but I absolutely love it!

2. My desk organizer for all my supplies!
I sifted through my scrap book paper to find patterns that I liked and fit with my scheme. I even used some of the paper from my 'read' letters to create a tie in. I bought this hardware container online at amazon since Lowe's didn't have the blue color I was looking for nor ones like this one with the different sized drawers. I still have to do something with the open back. When I was at home depot with my mum a couple weeks ago I found some sheets of aluminum, steel, etc. that are more or less for the ceiling or other things like that but the size and shape would be a perfect fit for this. They had intricate designs as well! Plus it could make the back magnetic so I can put magnets on the back!
3. Student clips for lunch count/attendance
I can't decide whether I am just going to write their names on these or my other brilliant idea would be to find last years pictures and cut them out and put them on circles. The only issue would be if we have new students to the district. But I could always ask to take a picture with permission and fix that issue. I still have to make my lunch tins that label the choices. The circles that I hot glued onto the clothes pins that I got at target were from a teacher store that was going out of business in lee's summit (they still have their lenexa store). Since they were cheap and came in a packet of 150 I figured if they start to get worn after awhile I can always make replacements easily.
4. My solution to no bulletin boards!
I am so excited about these! I want to make two more. I found the yard sticks at home depot for 68 cents a piece.I didn't want the homedepot part to show on them just the numbers and measuring tics, so I found some contact paper that is actually cork!! (Homedepot is where I got mine, target has it too but not in a big enough roll!). This allows me to use tacks as well on the rulers! Also helps with the more natural feel I wanted to give these. The only thing that kinda makes me sad is that I can only fit 4 clothes pins on a yard stick with room for papers to hang from them. if I have 30 kiddos.. you can see the problem. So I figure if I get two more.. maybe I can just feature small groups work on these. I also still want to make cute clipboards to display work as well as the frame idea.
1. comfy seat cushion

As a reward for my 'VanMaele' cash incentive/behavioral system I am creating. Students can 'buy' with their VanMaele Cash this lovely cushion to help their bum not get sore on those hard seats! I found this one at Target its kinda hard to tell because of the flash faded it out but it is really black. Which I chose since it wouldn't show as much dirt. I want to get a colorful one and it be my birthday throne cushion for students birthdays! (might have to get a couple if more than one shares a day).

2. Book Shelf Solution

Since I bought a spinning wire book rack for 10 dollars at a teaching supply store going out of business sell (the rack actually wasn't suppose to be on sale but I managed to get the last one before they realized that the owner didn't want to sell them! Lucky me!!) I realized that since it is a big one I might not need other shelves in my room for books. I can maximize the space as well on the rack by setting books up like I have in the picture. I also wanted to solve the problem of books falling through the wire and I discovered that this tubs fit perfectly. I found them at the dollar tree for cheap! I want to take scrap book paper and jazz them up a bit. But the nice thing is if I want to change the books out all I have to do is lift the tub out and add a new one in. I also am organizing the rack by the interest level and guided reading level of the books.

3.Leveling Books

I have almost completely labelled all the books I have. Obviously some are too young or too old but now they are all labeled so I know for future reference. I color coded the books with the stickers in the right corner by interest level (as well as wrote the grade interest level ... note the #) and then the guided reading level (note the alphabet letter).

4. Genre Stickers

Since I am lucky to have a mum that works at the library she was able to get me some of these genre stickers that were rejected either because of unevenness of the ink or position of the image on the sticker. I have already labeled the genre on most my books with these guys!

6. Writer's Bloc Solution

I must recommend this to any teacher out there! I am in love with this! It helps students who are stuck on what they should write about for a story. It allows for some pretty silly stories to be told. They also have ones for poetry and other genres. Definitely want to get the whole set for my writing center.

I bought a map poster that you can punch the pieces out and put together originally because this is the size that I need for my magnet idea. I wanted to cut each state out laminate it and then add magnets to the back and be able to place it on my board. Although This map which I realized when I got it home is broken up by region, Which I kinda like because its a different take on a map then those I have seen out and about. So my question is do i laminate the regions and not cut each state out? I am thinking maybe so and then just get another one that I could cut the individual states out of. Win Win. I bought this map at U.S. Toy for reference.

Since my last update, I had time to squeeze in one more of my classroom crafty sessions in and made my supply desk organizer.. don't worry pictures and details will soon be up. For now though I wanted to write a short opinion piece over Early Head Start due to my own experiences that were eye opening. If you didn't know I have been working for the past few weeks at my new job at an early education center that is in within a local school district. After two weeks of working there I handed in my two weeks notice. Something I have never done due to being frustrated until now. I realized quickly why I didn't think of early ed one bit when decided what branch of education I wanted to go into. I will start with the most current pressing issue that is shadowing early education in Missouri.
Most people haven't heard the word yet, but Missouri is cutting Early head start funding. This is a significant amount of money (7 million I believe was the number they threw out at our HR meeting I attended telling us our jobs would be getting cut). Apparently, no one associated with the early head start program saw it coming. Which is something that kind of gets me, first because word travels fast in Jeff City (well around any political bodies), second they had announced there were going to be cuts made in education and the early ed programs seemed to be having quite the big budgets.Besides that point though, I don't feel incredibly shocked that the program is getting cut. MARK ( the group that deals with the political side of things and all the funding.. also who hands down the money to early head start programs (aka.. schools themselves)). is currently redoing their budget in efforts to try to save at least a few kiddos from being cut from the program and saving a few staff from cuts. But regardless.... most early head start teachers will be cut. Bad timing to with an rocky education job market and the timing of the year... a lot of places have already conducted their interviews and filled positions for next year. Not only is staff extremely shocked but the news won't be extremely easy to break to many families that utilize the program. Before I progress anymore for any newbies, early education centers with head start are required to have so many state funded spots and federally funded spots in classrooms (spots referring to an open place for a kid in a classroom). Only a small handful of parents actually pay for services (like 5 parents total in this huge district). As for federally funded kids who won't be affected, that would be only 21 kids district wide... which is very few. That means almost 98% of the kids in early education ages 0-3 will be affected by this. Tomorrow we are going to be informing parents that as of June 29th their kid will not be able to attend the center and receive any services. I know that there will be many upset parents. For some, those that do work it means they might be having bigger budget crunches due to hiring daycare or even having to quit their jobs an go on welfare to take care of their child. I feel bad for some of the kids that are state funded, the center provides them with the love and attention they need to grow up and have a shot at success. Many depended on the food, the diapering, the education and interaction to grow and live. On the other hand though I understand the state completely.. but they kind of wasted money in the first place with the early head start program. Here is why I think that:
1. Last year the budget was so large for early head start that they bought toys and other materials that they didn't really need, solely because they needed to use all the grant money ( too much was given! HELLO!!!). Plus the money couldn't be saved to prevent situations such as the current. If they could have saved some of the extra money that could be funding some kids and saving a job or two.
2. The schools milk the money. No where else in the public school system you will find free food for staff, children and parents. It took me off guard when I was told I can have lunch with the kids for free (wouldn't be taken out of my pay) and that the parents could come in and eat with their children for free as well. What bugged me was on the menu it had meal prices for adults. This makes me question that maybe we are technically suppose to pay but since there was excess funds they could do free food at the center. Still seems weird though.
3. Where is the learning? I try to incorporate educational opportunities in my classroom with my little ones but what I have observed in other rooms and what I am given for instruction and duties seems nothing more than normal daycare routine. This is incredibly sad. Part of it is having staff who do not have a degree or education pertaining to early childhood, the other is having staff with cda's or associates. I don't wanted to knock completely associate degrees but there is a reason they are ranked less than a bachelor's on the ladder of education. The lesson plans I've seen for early education at the center seemed lazy and not detailed enough. 3 words (i.e. roll the ball) on a lesson plan doesn't seem right. Yeah they place it in the domain (social, emotional, physical, etc.) but still I think they should be expanded and more in depth. Also let's face it when you have infants you can teach them but it is more about nurture at that stage...yet we (*taxpayers) pay for educational services?
4. Sorry but I have to say it--- There are quite a few people that use the system. I am a democrat but in this matter it could be perceived as more of a conservative viewpoint, but, yes I think some services like health care should be available to everyone ( with some restrictions/guidelines), however, those who are just taking and never contributing shouldn't be getting a easy ride. What I mean by this is I see daily families where no one in the household works, nor are they trying to find a job, they sit at home but they send the kids to the center because a) they don't have to watch the kid and instead can have their own free time b) they know the kid will get food, transportation and diapers for free (less cost for them) and c)they are plain lazy. It is sad that some people who have kids don't take responsibility and an active role in their child(ren)'s life. We have a bunch of "takers". I.E. the school sent home picture packets for each kid if they wanted the pictures they could take what they wanted and send the rest back along with the money for them. What happened though was most kept the pictures and never paid. What can the school do about it? Nothing. The school then has to pay for the pictures themselves. Let's be honest lifetouch pictures aren't the cheapest things. Especially the packets that they send home to try to sale the pictures (at least 60 dollars worth of pictures in each packet). These parents create additional expenses for the schools. My fave example come from this past week when a parent made the remark that we got 2 days off this week and how nice that must be (it was said in a snarky manner). The 2 days were p.d. days, they weren't vk days we still had to work but no children were at the center. Obliviously the staff remained professional and ignored the comment, but the comment ironically came from a father who is unemployed, isn't looking for a job and stays at home all day.. yet sends his child in to the center everyday almost from open to close (7:30 to 6pm).
5. We have to pay for that?!? Early head start requires teachers to make home visits. I get that they want the teacher to go to see the environment the child is in and give parents suggestions on things they can do in their homes to help their child, but it almost seems like we are there acting like social services seeing if the environment is fit. We don't perform home visits in elementary or highschool... why should taxpayers, etc. have to pay transportation cost to go to these visits and salary for the staff to do so (home visits take a LOT of time to complete!).

All-in-All I stand with the state on this one... Early Head Start wasn't worth the money. Of course, I do feel for those children that are placed in households, were going to the center is vital for them to receive the nurture they need but there comes a time when the parents need to recognize their responsibility in raising a child. Society as a whole needs to perk up their eyes and take a listen. You need to be a contributing member of society not just a baby factory (I say baby factory since most of the state kids have siblings... way over 80% do. If you can't take care of a child you shouldn't keep having more). Maybe someday they can figure out what they can do to help young children (in providing better services) but also eliminate people taking advantage of the services provided and being mindful of a budget (not giving large, excessive sums).
I know there will be some who disagree with this view but I felt the need to relay it.

*disclaimer: I love all my students and only wish the best for them. I work to make a better life for them and I work to get the parents more involved in their child's life. I am not saying in anyway that I don't see parents who actually contribute. I am instead giving a general blanket statement about the my general observations over all of early education in especially lower income areas.E. I am proud to say I found some cute stuff that will be great in my classroom. Plus, I am a huge fan of neighborhood garage sales--- so much easier then finding individual ones. Below are my finds some need some TLC but once I get them back up to beauty standards they are going to be fabulous!

1). cute metal drawers/bins
Location: Bent Tree neighborhood garage sale: hsh estate sale
Price: $1 each
These were my first buy of the day.. well all the orange ones. I went back later for the green ones because I realized I needed them as well... too bad 2 of them had already sold but the one that was in a different room from the rest was still there so I snag it. Still need to take the white price stickers off them.

2). Glass/metal table (slash shelf)
Location: Bent Tree neighborhood garage sale
Price: $8
When I pulled up outside this house I knew I wanted this piece. I was kinda sad to see that it was a bit bent (which I later found out because the owner had taken a hammer to it to make the glass shelves more tight.. aka not be able to lift up). The color isn't bad so I am still debating repainting it. I need to wash it off to see what exactly I am working with.
3) Dinosaur
Location: Bent Tree neighborhood garage sale
price: $1 and 50 cents
My lovely mum actually bought this for me, it won't be a permanent fixture in the classroom but something fun to put out during our dino week.
4) Orange shelf
Location: Millstone neighborhood
price: $5
Definitely will be painting this piece. It was in a little girl's room apparently (she wrote her name in pencil on it). It caught my eye.. probably because it was orange, but I think it will be a good little shelf for keeping student supplies on and whatnot. I am thinking of painting it a teal color.. still debating though.
I knew I definitely wanted to do something similar. I wanted actual color on the letters for two reasons: 1) i have tan walls and a color scheme already in mind 2) I have read some feng shui books for the classroom, as well as, book pertaining to special needs students and for those students black and white can overwhelm them since there is such a contrast in colors. Also I learned that having lots of red in the classroom can also be distracting and make students feel more anxious. All in all, thank goodness that I was already thinking of staying more neutral, calming with blues, greens, tans, whites, and occasional bright focus pieces. I have a travel/adventure theme already in place since it fits with the grade level (5th grade). I read once again that exploration is a big key thing to stress in 5th, plus a lot of the curriculum covers exploration in its many facets. Let us not forget I myself have the travel bug so i will also enjoy such theme (and i can use some of my travel pictures in my classroom! bonus!). Anyways, back to my latest project... I went to hobby and bought the chipboard letters (walmart doesn't carry the bigger letters anymore!), I also decided to make the project easier and headed to the scrapbook paper aisle-- which if you ever hear about me heading to hobby lobby you can always find me in that aisle.... so addicting--- and I can't help it that feel compelled to take advantage of scrapbook paper sales (which is it me or does it seem like it is always on sale at hobby lobby?!?!). Anyways I found Daily Junque paper by house of three in a pack of 24 pieces. The colors were perfect and it is actually card stock paper. The only downer was that the pages are double-sided (not the same print on both sides) so that kinda sucks. Once at home I picked out my papers to use on each letter: 'R'- I wanted bold and eye catching but not a real busy pattern. 'E' I went with a pink colored paper that had a pretty busy pattern/ collage feature. 'A'- I went with a pink graph paper that had a distressed/ stained look but helps balance the pattern on the 'e', 'D'- I wanted to something that popped but still kept balance so I went with the yellow number patterned paper.. plus the paper was too darn cute not to use. I used modpodge to attached the paper after stenciling the letters on to the paper and cutting them out. I did not use modpodge on top of the paper since I didn't want a gloss plus this way i can always remove the paper easier if i want to change up my theme. Below are pictures of each letter and then them all together! I can't wait to put them up in my reading nook in my classroom!!! They turned out sooo cute!
Now back in the United States and home in the KC metro, I am looking for a full time teaching position. I graduated the day after returning home and since then have been applying to every school district in the kc metro area. I am currently working for Independence School District as a substitute teacher. I am grateful to have a sub job and it has helped me keep refining myself as a teacher. I got to teach p.e. for K- 2 at a school, which is something I don't have a lot of experience with. I also have been taking a lot of early education jobs, which is something I never really pursued in teaching since I was only elementary ed and not early ed. It definitely is different from elementary ed. I have had to handle lots of potty incidents and diapers, sat through nap times, and sang songs (for those who don't know me all that well, I am a horrible singer- so it was one of my biggest fears singing to strangers.. even if the strangers are only 3 years old). Tomorrow I have a long day ahead of me at a school I haven't been to before. It is an early childhood- head start school so shall prove to have some funny, good experiences I am sure! Just wanted to give a little update. Will write more later. I have a plan for this blog that involves education articles, projects, lessons, and ideas. excited!!!E. Robinetthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10992259148529243022noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2339542516415815545.post-6913445150654113232011-12-15T16:37:00.000-08:002011-12-15T16:37:07.024-08:00last day of school in ireland!Today we did maths, Spanish, Art, worked on BT presentations, had my farewell and also watched most of the movie "Twister". It is crazy that we can just show it and dont have to send home permissions due to language and whatnot. Does make it a lot easier not having to worry about those things but..... in the states cursing in school is way more looked down upon... as some of the students pointed out to me, you wouldnt be irish if you didnt curse every once in awhile. Interesting to say the least.

I hope to post more later but need to head to bed to be able to wake for my flight home tomorrow morning.
I found a more complex way of making snowflakes to give them more of a challenge. When I started in on the lesson with them I ask them if anyone could tell me how snowflakes formed and did a little science background with them. As I walked them through the steps and the diagram I drew on the board I was a little worried that it was too complicated for them. However, they proved me wrong and their snowflakes look fabulous!

Their lighthouses for young scientist look amazing as well, I will try to take some pictures to put up here to show you guys. They are wiring them at the moment.

The students are also working on a presentation in their junior achievement groups. They got invited to the BT headquarters in Ireland to present their findings on the environment and renewable energy to staff there. I am sad that I wouldn't get to see it!

Don't forget you can always see what we are up to on the school site. Click here to see some pictures from our science projects over the past few weeksE. The dad that came in who works for Electric Ireland put on a fantastic presentation about energy, electricity, and numbers for the students... he didn't get to finish it all but will be coming back in some other time to finish it up.

2. the musical- it was great to see so many different schools there to watch the performance. Everyone was even given a snack during intermission from the secondary school. It was kind of hard to follow but the music was good-- can't go wrong with Queen. Although, there was some swearing in the play that was not exactly school appropriate, but the kids didn't react to it so that was good.

3. We have been practicing for the carol service-- their christmas play. The students have done an excellant job in acting their roles. Quite sad I am barely going to miss their performance... It takes place Monday night, the 19th.

4. Tomorrow we are going to the ASPCA with the kids to talk about animal cruelty and the responsibilities of being a pet owner. I am quite pumped because I love animals. The kids already asked Mr. Malseed if they could adopt one of the animals as a class pet. (The response was no to that if you were wondering).E. Tomorrow, one of my students father is coming in to do a workshop with the kids over Energy. He works at Electric Ireland so should be great. After that we are walking to Newpark school in Blackrock, a ways down the road, to see them perform their musical We Will Rock You Then we will return to school and the day will be finished! On Friday we are going to DSPCA, which is an animal rescue place. The students will get a tour and learn about how they care for animals and wildlife, and the responsibilities that come with a pet. Looking at their website they have some cute residents.

On another note, the Christmas tree is up in the classroom and we are doing a Kris Kringle gift exchange next week. Definitely wouldn't experience such a thing in public schools back home. It was funny the other day in the teacher's lounge they started talking about how in the states we have division between church and state. Most the teachers couldn't believe it and had questions about what all we could do in schools and what we couldn't in regards to religious holidays. When I told them how Wal-mart called their Christmas trees 'Holiday Trees' they all couldn't believe it.E. They are close to banning them in primary schools since they have dropped in PIMMS (?) rankings in maths. I agree that more students are struggling with math due to over relying on the calculator. I even think that I fell into some of that reliance on the technology. It will be interesting to see if it actually is implemented in the schools and what the results will be.
It has been quite the overall switch from my time at Merrill to here. I have learned quite a lot in this new setting as well. One thing that is difficult to work around is that the students have homework limits so that they only get a certain amount of time's worth of work so that "parents don't complain", and Friday they don't assign any homework at all. Some of the things I want them to complete at home they can't due to the amount of time they need for other hw in Irish, history, or whatever it is that I myself didn't assign. So some of my stuff gets pushed to the side, I have been trying to make my lessons have time for them to work on things that I normally would have assigned as homework. What this all makes me think of is the old debate of whether hw is important enough to have still a part of school. I definitely think homework has its place in schools as long as it is meaningful to the students and within reason. But what it further makes me reflect on is the question of am I asking too much of the students? Am I giving them too much homework?'E. Robinetthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10992259148529243022noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2339542516415815545.post-562730746686204022011-11-27T12:22:00.000-08:002011-11-27T12:23:37.416-08:00Friday's lessonsI continued creative writing from the previous week the students. Since they were having issues with mechanics I decided to really break it down and start from the beginning with them. I introduced the 5 step process to them and basically let them do a creative writing piece following the steps. We picked up on Friday with the proofreading/editing bit. I wanted them to not only get in the habit of proofreading their own work but seeing the importance of it. I also wanted them to do some peer editing. I found a nice checklist that suited for both types of editing and went over it with the kids. I was kind of shocked when Mr. Malseed said they had never done peer editing before. Whoa! He seemed to like it and might perhaps use it once I leave. On Monday I plan on having them finish up editing and writing their final draft and submit that to me. I haven't decided if I want them to publish it on a nice piece of paper and then display these in the room. I think the amount of errors in the writing is going to be significantly less then what I have been finding. I am also hoping that the class goal of having perfect punctuation happens! (cross my fingers)

oh and did i mention we can't assign the students homework on Friday!!!!
-management wise: I kind of feel at a loss to what other strategies to use. I know that management has always been something for me to improve upon in but these students are really stumping me. I notice it is not just with me but the main classroom teacher as well that the students misbehave for. They are a chatty bunch. To get them back on track or to squelch any side conversations seems almost impossible some days. They get bold and will keep on talking even after I have said their name, given the warning of extra homework, and tried multiple other ways of correcting the behavior. I have tried clapping, raised voice, waiting, etc. and nothing has worked. They don't really have a time out place. If i see a student with repeated issues I usually just sit him/her out of the activity. I think part of it is that they did not have a firm management style from the beginning so when I entered the picture not only was that a factor but they know that I am not from here so they try to take advantage of that as well. It is a bit frustrating but I am definitely learning things from the situation.E. Robinetthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10992259148529243022noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2339542516415815545.post-12178428461436963202011-11-23T15:51:00.000-08:002011-11-23T15:51:18.290-08:00LostApparently my last post didn't actually post and is not in any of the drafts... but here is my weekly update:

Been teaching more regularly now. Which is great! I love being able to introduce the students to my style of teaching mixed in with theirs.

I have just started a unit on Length (metric system) with them in math. Thinking about everything in metric units does make me pause. The kids also corrected me right away when i wrote on the board "meter" because they spell it "metre". I first introduced lengths to them by asking them what system of measurement do they use in ireland (metric system). I also asked them if anyone knew the name of the system that we use in the united states (English System) none of them knew but that was ok. I gave a brief history on the system and why the states have a different one. I then progressed into the lesson with having them list the names of metric units from the basic meter. I wrote them down on the smartboard as we went. We then went over prefixes of the units and how each related to the meter. We then dived directly into conversion of mm to cm and vice versa. The students caught on to this immediately. Class then had a break. Later in the afternoon we returned back to math. I discussed with them the tools we use to measure length.. a trundle wheel, a ruler, a metre stick, and a tape measure. I had the kids tell me what kind of situation would be appropriate for each tool. I then did a quick review over the names of the units. Progressing on, I told them we were going to have a scavenger hunt. I had them get out their math copy books and a pencil and to make the chart I was making on the smartboard with me to record their data in. Once I had that complete I explained that in the scavenger hunt they would be in pairs. One student would draw a card (which i had made) and read what the measurement was on it and record it (i.e. 5 cm). The same person would then have to look around the classroom for an object that they thought was the same length and record what it was in the chart. The second person then would check their partner's answer by measuring it using the appropriate measuring tool. They were expected to write down the actual measurement. Last part of the chart was that they had to find the difference between the actual length and the length that they were looking for and record it. In the end once all the cards had been used they had to find the average (many of them had to convert cm-mm or mm-cm for this to work. They did great with measuring the objects they chose and using the correct tools. I did have a student though who was way off task after multiple attempts of me to get him back on track. He was not working with his partner he chose and was instead distracting other groups. I had to take him aside and talk with him about my expectations and directions for the activity. I am not the only one who has been having difficulties with this particular student behavior wise. My mentor and the resource teacher have been constantly having issues with him as well. I have tried multiple approaches and none have worked. Contact was made today with his family and I am researching more behavioral management ideas and approaches to try to use with him.

Dec. 9th I get to go on another field trip with the kids to the animal shelter up by the mountains. Should be a really great trip!

The Irish Times is the longest running newspaper here in Ireland. It is a non-profit newspaper and is ran by a Trust group, not a corporate company (so no shareholders). It is not that often that they give tours through the place so it was a great opportunity for the kids. They took us throughout the printing facility and we got to get up really close to everything (which health and safety would probably have had an issue with, but what they don't know won't hurt). Personally, my favorite part was the paper storage area with the robots... so incredibly cool. No school transport was used for the trip so parents were vital to making this work. We had 4 parent volunteers drive the kids over to the press and join in the tour.Upon arriving we broke the kids up into 2 groups to make it more manageable to do our tour in. The whole printing and distributing process was explained to us along our tour. The students asked a lot of great questions in regards to supply and demand, cost, employment, and technology. I was especially proud when they asked how Eco-friendly the company was.
I was also impressed by the fact that in planning this trip the students were given the permission slips just yesterday for the trip and all of them remembered their forms today to go.
Even if there was not a specific connection to our units of study the field trip was worthwhile in that it exposed the students to another career path and how the use of technology has increased production and cut cost.
- I also taught a comprehension lesson today with the focus on Salvador Dali... used the smart board (which I have fallen in LOVE with... I want one in my future classroom.!!!). Went well except all the students got really into looking at the pieces and making comments to each other so it got a little out of hand and I had to really pull to get them back on track. Will be finishing the lesson up tomorrow with them writing responses to a specific piece.
- Correcting their English: I was so frustrated in seeing their half completed (which should have been completely done) corrections with so many mistakes.. even when I wrote in the correction they needed (all they had to do was re-write the sentence with the corrections, easy peasy). I think a lot of them rush through their work and don't really take the time to do it correctly. I would think they would know when to capitalize letters in a sentence at this point in school but I am just not seeing it from them in their individual work consistantly. I need to construct some more lessons for this upcoming week to work on core grammar to get this cleared up. They are such great creative writers.... if only the mechanics were perfect as well!E. Dec. 3rd is the date set, so just right around the corner.

Night school is coming back, although the computer lab has to have serious upgrades for this to be permenant.

Workbooks- talked to company, will be offered reduced price on old versions next year. Still trying to decide what will be done since this new verison is not that great.

ground works.

Special Ed strategies

Behavioural Management strategies- focus on challenging behaviours. Research has shown students need to be sitting face on with teacher and no group seating. (The research wasn't cited in the meeting- but i would like to find out where she got that information. Would be interesting to look at).

Math educational strategies- 40% of Irish people have trouble with general, everyday math.

Dyslexia- focus on

And finally one of big discussion makers: In December 1,500 teachers will lose their jobs (financial cuts- obviously this is not just focused in my school this is the country-- well republic of Ireland at least). Furthermore, class sizes will be increased. Already class sizes are in the high twenties and low 30's. There is going to be a big march in Dublin coming up in a week or two as well as a flash mob on o'Connolly street (which is a very, very busy street) to bring attention to the issue.
